Woollahra is a Sydney suburb found 5km east of the central business district. It forms part of Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. The area falls under the Municipality of Woollahra, and has a population of more than 7,100.

History

This suburb was founded by Daniel Cooper, the inaugural speaker of the legislative assembly of New South Wales. He constructed Woollahra House in 1856, taking its name from an Aboriginal word that means “meeting ground”. The Coopers played a large part in the suburb’s development over the subsequent years.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today, Woollahra is known for its trendy shopping village. A host of boutique stores are based here, including many antique shops. The village also features cafes, restaurants and pubs, such as the old Phoenix Hotel. Woollahra is an affluent spot, lined with trees and very peaceful. It boasts several lovely old churches, including All Saints Church on Ocean Street. The houses are large and attractive, designed in a variety of styles.
