History

The first permanent European settlement in Woolgoolga arrived in the 1870s. Before then, the area was home to the Gumbaynggirr tribe. The town takes its name from a native word, “Woolgoolga”. This word describes both the area and the local lilly-pilly trees.

Woolgoolga has a rich history of banana growing. In recent decades, the industry has declined. This is because of competition from Queensland and from overseas. Since the 1990s, many local banana plantations have closed. Many locals have switched to growing blueberries.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Woolgoolga has the largest population of Sikhs in all of Australia. The town is home to two gurdwaras. These are the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple and the First Sikh Temple Woolgoolga. The town also hosts Curryfest in celebration of its Sikh community.

The town has a coastal location between Brisbane and Sydney. This makes Woolgoolga a popular tourist destination.
