About Southern Bone Density Services

AT A GLANCE
  • Friendly and caring service
  • We are conveniently located
  • Over 20 years of experience
  • Locally owned and operated
  • Licensed to perform all bone density scanning
Bone density is routinely assessed at the spine and hip, and if necessary, the forearm and whole body.
We aim to increase community awareness of osteoporosis by providing education and accurate reproducible bone densitometry testing services.

Bone density is a painless test which measures how much calcium there is in your bones. The purpose of this test is to measure how strong your bones are and indicate your future risk of fracture.

We can scan bones and assess for bone loss, which helps to determine whether you are developing or have osteoporosis or have a thinning of the bone matrix.

We can provide:

  • BMD or DXA
  • Digital Lateral Vertebral Assessment (DLVA)
  • Fracture Risk Assessment (FRAX)
  • Whole Body Composition
  • Body Mass Index (BMI)

The staffs at Southern Bone Density Services is highly qualified and experienced, providing a professional, friendly and caring service. Reporting is performed by our highly skilled nuclear medicine physicians who are both qualified and experienced in bone density.

FAQs

  • What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition that affects the bones, causing the bone to become fragile and brittle. This can lead to a higher risk of fracture (break). Although the most common sites for an osteoporotic fracture are spine, hip, wrist and upper arm; any bone can be affected by this condition.

  • When does Osteoporosis occur?

Osteoporosis occurs when bones loose minerals more quickly than the body can replace them, resulting in the bones becoming thinner and less dense. Unfortunately, there are often no warning signs or symptoms until a fracture happens - this is why Osteoporosis is often called the 'Silent Disease'.

  • How can I contact you?

You contact us by giving a call on 0242 266 555.

  • What is Digital Lateral Vertebral Assessment (DLVA)?

This scan enables assessment & measurement of the individual vertebrae for fracture, which previously could only be done by x-ray at a much higher exposure to radiation than the MediLink Medix DR bone densitometer.

  • What is Fracture Risk Assessment (FRAX)?

Utilising the FRAX algorithms developed by the WHO (World Health Organisation) to evaluate fracture risk, the MediLink Medix DR is able to calculate the 10 year probability of hip fracture and the 10 year probability of a major clinical (spine, forearm, hip, shoulder) osteoporotic fracture.

  • Do we need a referral?

A referral is required for bone density screening; Bone density scanning is covered by Medicare and bulk billed if Medicare criteria are met; No referral is required for whole body composition studies, however these are not covered by Medicare.
