Wollongong is the third largest city in New South Wales with a population of over 300,000. It is 82km south of Sydney. Wollongong was originally inhabited by the Dharawal people. The name Wollongong means ‘Seas of the South’.

History

Wollongong has a long history of industry with its unique setting between the ocean and the rainforest. This position gave people the chance to use its natural resources. These early settlers included cedar cutters and graziers.

By the 1920s, the Wollongong’s coal attracted heavy industry. Soon, the suburb’s port served the booming coal and steel industries.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

These days, the amount of heavy industry in Wollongong has declined and the suburb has changed. It is now home to many shopping malls, restaurants and more. You can also find the impressive Nan Tien Temple – the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere.
