Winmalee is a town in New South Wales surrounded by the Blue Mountains National Park. It has a population of over 6,500 and is 80 kilometres west of Sydney.

History

The town was originally known as North Springwood before it officially became Winmalee in 1972. Many people believe that the word Winmalee is an Aboriginal word for “north” but it’s unlikely as this isn’t a term they would have known. However, the area was inhabited by the Dharug tribe.

Most of the tribe moved to the Blue Mountains to join the Gundungurra tribe. Other members were wiped out during European settlement. There are several shelters and open sites used by the tribe that still exist in Winmalee today.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Winmalee’s village centre contains lots of specialty shops including Target, Coles Supermarket and Chemmart Pharmacy. There’s also a sports club, vet and small food court, as well a dance studio located near the mall.

You can find small shopping districts throughout the town and near the village centre. The area also has Summerhayes Park, which is used for sports like tennis, netball and football.
