Windsor is a small town in New South Wales. It lies 56km to the north-west of Sydney’s central business district. It has a population of just under 2,000 people and is sits alongside the Hawkesbury River.

History

Windsor takes its name from Windsor-on-Thames in England. It was first known as Green Hills on account of the fertile land surrounding the Hawkesbury River, land which offered settlers good soil for agriculture.

The town was officially recognised in 1810 by Governor Lachlan Macquarie but it is actually the third oldest place of British settlement in Australia, first noted as early as 1791.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Windsor is a town full of history and visitors to the area will not be short of interesting sites to visit. These include the historic Tebbutt’s Observatory, as well as a number of buildings which are listed on the Register of the National Estate.

The town was also used to film parts of the popular television series ‘A Country Practice’.
