Welcome to Whale Beach, NSW
The northern beachside suburb of Whale Beach is located in the local government area of Northern Beaches Council. At 40km outside of the Sydney Central Business District, it is an ideal location for visitors who enjoy sandy beaches. The area has a population of just over 2,000 people.
History
One of the features of Whale Beach is the property that was designed by the architect Alexander Stewart Jolly. Careel House is located at Careel Head and the single storey bungalow overlooks Whale Beach. Built using locally quarried sandstone blocks, the heritage-listed dwelling dates back to 1931.
A part of a grant in 1816 to James Napper, the area remained unused throughout most of the 19th century. It was later developed with holiday residences and a kiosk at the beginning of the 1900s. It wasn’t until the roads were laid and motor transport became popular in the 1950’s that the area became more of a residential suburb.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The Whale Beach Surf Lifesaving Club is located west of the beach and a surf break known locally as the wedge is at the Northern end. There are several restaurants and a boutique hotel in the area along with surf shop and bed and breakfast facilities too.
