The Lakeside suburb of Warners Bay is situated 15km from Newcastle’s central business district. The area takes its name from the early settler Jonathan Warner. The area is a mix of residential and commercial development with over 615 businesses based there. The region has a population of nearly 7,500 people.

History

Before the area was settled by Europeans around 1825, the Awabakal Aboriginal tribe lived there. The first revenues in the region were made from coal which that was mined from a small private mine owned by the Warner family. This mine closed in 1884 and by the mid-1930’s the Warner Homestead has been demolished.

The first school in Warners Bay opened in 1992 and the high school started there in January of 1966. Due to the state of the early roads, horse and boat were the main forms of transport in the area until 1931 when a private bus service was introduced.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Warners Bay boasts several premier sporting clubs including the Warners Bay Panthers Soccer Team and a local junior cricket team. It also has its own Ice Hockey Stadium and ice skating club. The main commercial area is located at the Foreshore Walk and Shopping Strip.
