Based in Newcastle, Waratah is a suburb in NSW. Waratah lies 6km from Newcastle’s Central Business District. It has a population of over 4,700 people. Waratah shares its name with the Waratah flower, which is the floral emblem of New South Wales.

History

Waratah station opened in 1858 and is now on NSW TrainLink’s Hunter line. Waratah used to have its own elected council and mayor. However, this changed when the town was established in 1871.

These days, Waratah is a quiet area. Local landmarks include the Calvary Mater Hospital and Maroba Nursing Home. The Waratah Rugby Union Football Club and Waratah Oval are popular with sports fans.

There is one shopping centre in Waratah. It is called Waratah Village. Waratah Village has a Coles, Kmart, newsagent, post office and other stores. Every Christmas, Waratah Village puts on a beautiful light show to celebrate the season.
