Wangi Wangi is a suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie. It’s found on a peninsula reaching into the lake itself, and has a population of over 2,600.
History
The exact translation is unclear, but the word “Wangi” is believed to mean any one of “water”, “night owl” or “dark green tree”. The peninsula used to be a tough place to reach (which made it a haven for cattle thieves), but modern transport has turned Wangi Wangi into a thriving tourist hotspot. From 1956 to 1986, the Wangi Power Station was a NSW energy supplier. Wangi Wangi was also the home of artist William Dobell towards the end of his life.

Wangi Wangi is a picturesque spot famed for its natural beauty. It’s a popular destination for fishing, camping, swimming and bushwalking. The Dobell House and Wangi Point Flora and Fauna Reserve are two of its main attractions. The peninsula also includes the Lake Macquarie State Conservation Area.
