History
Urunga is an Aboriginal phrase meaning ‘long white sands’. Prior to the European settlement, the land was inhabited by the Gumbainggar peoples. In 1841, William Miles, a stockman from Kempsey was the first European to enter the Bellingen Valley. He exploited the area’s abundance of cedar trees which heralded a ‘tree rush’.
Farmers followed the timber cutters who then used the land to grow maize and to graze dairy cattle.
