Ultimo is situated 2 kilometres south-west of the Sydney Central district. It is an inner-city suburb of Sydney, New South Wales with a population of over 7,000.

History

The name Ultimo comes from an estate owned by Dr John Harris. Harris Street is also named in this man’s honour. The Harris family owned mainly farmland until the area was subdivided in 1859. Family members of Harris built many of the first houses in the area.

In the early 20th century, many houses were knocked down to make way for factories, wool stores and a power station. Nowadays, very little industry remains in the area, which is mostly made up of homes and small businesses.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Ultimo has a local landmark called the Uniting Church on the corner of Quarry Street. It was built in 1883.

The suburb has a good commercial area on Broadway, Wattle Street and Harris Street. There is also the Broadway Shopping Centre for locals and visitors. As well as many businesses, Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum can be found on Harris Street.
