The town of Tumut lies on the shores of the Tumut River between Sydney and Melbourne. It has a population of 6,000 people.
History
Before the arrival of the first Europeans settlers, the area was home to various indigenous tribes. Experts believe that the name Tumut comes from the Wiradjuri language and means “a quiet resting place by the river”.
Tumut got its first post office in 1849. The settlers also planted several deciduous trees in the area. To this day Tumut celebrates its annual Festival of the Falling Leaf.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Tumut houses many historical buildings. The most noteworthy ones are the church and the courthouse. Its close proximity to the Snowy Mountains makes it a great place to start your winter sports adventure. The resort Selwyn Snowfields is only a day trip away. Tumut also offers great mountain bike trails, fishing rivers and hiking paths.
