Thirroul sits on the shore of the Pacific Ocean. It is a northern suburb of Wollongong with a population of 5,620. Part of the Illawarra escarpment called Lady Fuller Park borders the suburb.

History

The suburb takes its name from the local Wodi Wodi Aborigines. The word Thirroul means “The Valley of the Cabbage Tree Palms”. The first European settlers arrived in Thirroul in the late 1860s. Early local industries included logging, farming, and whaling.

Thirroul was called Robbinsville until 1892. A plague on the local beach honours the crew of the Amy. The crew was lost when the ship was wrecked in 1898.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Thirroul Beach is probably the suburb’s most prominent feature. It is an exposed beach and has reliable surf all year round. Anita’s Theatre is another major local landmark. Thirroul’s primary commercial area is located to the north of Bulli Pass.

The suburb holds Thirroul Seaside & Arts Festival every April.
