Welcome to The Rocks, NSW
The Rocks is a popular tourist area in the state of New South Wales. It is situated on the southern shore of Sydney Harbour immediately north-west of Sydney’s central business district and has a population of around 600.
History
This area was once known as Tallawoladah by the Cadigal people. It was established soon after the colony’s formation in 1788. During the earliest European settlement, The Rocks area was thought of as a slum.
In 1968, the local government wanted to transform The Rocks by destroying all the original buildings. After many protests, a ban was put in place right up until 1975. Even though changes have been made since you can still find original buildings in the area today.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The Rocks in central Sydney has an amazing selection of shops, cafes and historic pubs. You can even walk around many small lanes and courtyards that date back to convict days. There is also a market every weekend with around 100 stalls.
Sydney’s oldest surviving pubs, the Fortune of War and Lord Nelson are well-worth a visit, as is the Museum of Contemporary Art.
