Welcome to Stroud, NSW
Stroud is a quaint country town on the Mid Coast of New South Wales. Around 70km north-east of Newcastle, it lies on the scenic Bucketts Way road. The population is 669.
History
The town’s beginnings date back to the late 1820s. The Australian Agricultural Company received a one-million-acre grant for land between Port Stephens and the Manning River.
Much of the company’s workforce, the majority convicts, resided in Stroud. By 1850, the area had become home to the company’s headquarters. Many settlers arrived from England to take up land grants in the area.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Stroud has somewhat bypassed the urbanisation that other local towns have succumbed to. A charming and picturesque town, there are many fine buildings still in existence. The Heritage Walk covers over 30 places of interest and includes Orchard Cottage built in 1830.
The annual International Brick and Rolling Pin Throwing competition is a sight to behold. Residents compete against towns of the same name in the United States, UK and Canada.
