Stockton is a suburb in Newcastle, NSW with a population of 4,195. It is located 600m from Newcastle’s central business district and is the only residential suburb that lies north of the Hunter River.

History

Residents settled in the suburb as soon as Newcastle’s foundation in 1797. In 1800, escaped convicts were shipwrecked on the peninsula. For this reason, it was initially called “Pirates Point”.

For much of the 19th Century, it served as an industrial and mining base. It became a working-class dormitory suburb in the 20th Century and still is today.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Stockton has a country town atmosphere because of its isolation. It has its own shops, churches, pubs and a caravan park. It also has two clubhouses and a swimming pool.

Surfing is a big part of Stockton life. Most surfing activities are based from the Stockton SLSC and on Stockton Beach.
