Stanmore is suburb located 5.5km from the Sydney central business district. It is a part of the local government area of Inner West Council and is home to a population of just over 7,700 people.

History

The land now known as Stanmore was given to colonial officers between 1793 and 1810 by Governor Phillip. In 1835, a saddler called John Jones bought land and called it the Stanmore Estate after the London district where he was born.

Throughout the 1880s and 1890s development gathered pace and with the opening of Newington College, property in Stanmore became highly sought after.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The main shopping area in Stanmore is centred around the railway station and Parramatta Road. Here, there is a shopping centre and plenty of independent shops and local businesses.

Stanmore is also home to the impressive Newington College which features a stunning Neo-Gothic building designed by Thomas Rowe.
