History

The area of St Leonards takes its name from the English statesman, Thomas Townshend. He was the 1st Viscount Sydney of St Leonards.

In 1868, the Gore Hill Cemetery was established on the Pacific Highway. It was the main cemetery for the area until it closed in 1975. However, it is still maintained as a heritage site today.
