The charming seaside town of South West Rocks lies at the mouth of the Macleay River. It is situated on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales and is 40km from Kempsey. The population is 4,816.
History
South West Rocks has a rich heritage. First established in the 1880s, the area became a popular bathing location for the community of the Macleay Valley. There are numerous theories as to how the area took its name.
The infamous Trial Bay Gaol located at Arakoon was established in 1877. Prison labour was used to help build a breakwater in Trial Bay to harbour ships unable to pass through the river’s mouth.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
With four spectacular beaches, South West Rocks is the perfect escape for a family beach holiday. The Smoky Cape Lighthouse is one of the oldest and tallest of its kind in Australia and is a popular tourist attraction.
For surf lovers, head to the popular Horseshoe Bay. The sandy beach here is also perfect for sunbathing and picnicking and offers a sheltered cove for swimming. If soaking up the surf isn’t your thing, the Arakoon and Hat Head national parks are a short distance away.
