Sawtell is a coastal community on the North Coast. It has a population of 3,490.

History

Modern day Sawtell Beach came to be after a log cutter found it in 1863. Farmer, Walter Harvey, established a settlement nearby to salvage valuable cedar.

In the early 1900s, the area around Sawtell Beach was purchased and subdivided by Oswald Sawtell. As such, the locality gets its name from Sawtell. By the 1930s a thriving village existed in the area.

The indigenous Gumbaynggirr clan are the original owners of the land.

Modern day Sawtell is close to Coffs Harbour Airport.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Sporting activities are popular in Sawtell with a number of clubs. Recreational clubs include Sawtell Golf Club, Sawtell Surf Lifesaving Club and Sawtell Tennis Club.

An annual Chill Festival serves a variety of chill-filled products. It is a popular tourist attraction.

The coastal lifestyle is popular with families and retirees. Some of New South Wales’ best surf beaches are in the vicinity.
