Rockdale is a suburb with a mixture of residential, commercial and light industrial areas. It is just 13km south of Sydney and has a population of over 14,000 people.

History

Rockdale has had many names throughout its history. These included Frog Hollow, White Gum Flat and West Botany. The name Rockdale was finally chosen in 1878 after it was suggested by the first postmistress, Mary Ann Greaves.

A railway station opened in 1884 and residential development began soon after, driven by the developer and MP, Fredrick Jamison Gibbes.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Rockdale’s main shopping area is located along the Princes Highway and surrounding streets. It features plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes, many with outdoor seating areas.

Other places to visit include the wonderful Bicentennial Park and the Rockdale Town Hall. The hall was built in 1940 and is a fine example of the Art Deco architecture once prominent in the area.
