Riverwood is a Sydney suburb found 18km south of the central business district. It’s part of St George, and falls under two different local government areas. These are Georges River Council and Canterbury-Bankstown Council. Riverwood has a population of more than 10,200.

History

Once known as Herne Bay, Riverwood first achieved fame during World War Two. A military hospital was built here for use by American soldiers. It treated over 9,000 patients, and received visits from the likes of Bob Hope and Eleanor Roosevelt. However, by the 1950s, the suburb had a reputation for crime and overcrowding. The name was changed to Riverwood, and heavy development provided more housing and better facilities.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today, Riverwood is known for the Riverwood Plaza shopping centre. It features a Woolworths, Coles, food court, and various other speciality outlets. Riverwood Park, Peakhurst Park and Salt Pan Reserve bring a touch of green to the suburb. There’s also a skate park and an indoor sports centre, and the old military hospital is now occupied by the Australian Air League.
