Richmond has a population of just over 5,500 and lies at the foot of the Blue Mountains in NSW. It lies just 65 kilometres from Sydney.

History

European explorers settled the area around Richmond in the late 1780s. It was only the third area in Australia to be settled by the British after Sydney and Parramatta.
Settlers were attracted to the land in the area which proved good for farming. By the turn of the nineteenth century Richmond was producing almost half of the grain made in the colony.

Lifestyle and entertainment

Due to Sydney’s urban expansion, Richmond is now considered to be an outer suburb of the city. It has a choice of schools, shops, other retail outlets and restaurants.

The town is noted for being surrounded by the Richmond Woodlands Important Bird Area. It has areas of eucalyptus woodland which are home to endangered species of birds.
