Rhodes is a suburb of Sydney, 16km west of the CBD in the local government area of the City of Canada Bay. It has a population of over 5,500.

History

Rhodes was named after the home of an early resident, Thomas Walker. The home was built on the north-eastern side of the peninsula and was named Rhodes after his grandmother’s home, Rhodes Hall, in Leeds, England.

Once a beautiful and heavily forested area, industry took over in 1911 when Messrs. G & C. Hoskins built a large foundry that made cast iron pipes.

From 1930 to the mid-1980s, the western part of the suburb was taken up by chemical manufacturing.

Rhodes is located 3km from Stadium Australia, Sydney Olympic Park, Sydney International Aquatic Centre, Bicentennial Park and Millennium Parklands.

It is home to major retail developments including Rhodes Waterside which includes an IKEA, Coles Supermarkets, Reading Cinemas, a Target, and Bing Lee superstores.
