Redhead is a beachside suburb in the City of Lake Macquarie. It’s located 16km south of Newcastle’s central business district, and has a population of more than 3,400.

History

Named for its distinctive headland, Redhead developed in the 1860s off the back of mining and banana orchards. The former ceased in 1928, two years after a mining explosion killed five people. Redhead’s post office opened in 1907, and its first school followed one year later. The suburb began proper development in the 1940s, and today operates as a popular tourist spot on the coast.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Redhead is known as one of the best surfing areas around Newcastle. The Awabakal Nature Reserve borders the suburb’s north-east, while Belmont Wetlands State Park lies to the south-west. Redhead features several bars and restaurants, including the much-loved Seaview Malaysian. The Fernleigh Track rail trail also passes through Redhead.
