Potts Point is a small suburb in Sydney, located around 3km from the central business district. For its size, it is densely populated with over 6,800 people living in an area just 0.7km² in size.

History

Potts Point is named after an early settler called Joseph Hyde Potts who worked for the Bank of New South Wales. Potts bought an area of harbourside land, then known as Woolloomooloo Hill, and renamed it Potts Point in 1830.

Further subdivisions of the land followed and development began, with many grand Georgian mansions built along the suburb’s ridge line. A lot of these mansions still survive today including ‘Rockwall House’ and ‘Tusculum’.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

This picturesque suburb has many fine heritage-listed buildings as well as the beautiful Victorian-era terraces located on Victoria Street.

Victoria Street is also well known for its plane trees which create an iconic canopy. The surrounding area has a number of pubs, nightclubs, and restaurants making Potts Point one of Sydney’s most popular entertainment centres.
