Pitt Town is a Sydney suburb based 59km north of the central business district. It has a population of more than 2,000, and forms part of the City of Hawkesbury local government area.

History

Along with Castlereagh, Richmond, Windsor and Wilberforce, Pitt Town is one of the five ‘Macquarie Towns’. Each one was founded in 1810 by Governor Lachlan Macquarie, around the Hawkesbury River area. Pitt Town began construction in 1811, but was moved to its current location in 1815. Despite this, it still didn’t develop quite as envisioned. The town was situated too far from the river flats, which meant an arduous daily hike for its farming population. Pitt Town would find great fame in the 1980s as the setting for the television show, A Country Practice.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Pitt Town is a historic spot with many fascinating old buildings. Its Heritage sites include Bona Vista, the Maid of Australia Inn and Scots Presbyterian Church. The Bird in Hand Inn and the Village Pantry are well worth a visit, and the Pitt Town Lagoon is teeming with wildlife.
