Picton is a town in New South Wales. It’s found in the Macarthur Region, around 80km south-west of Sydney. Picton falls under the Wollondilly Shire local government area, and has a population of more than 5,000.

History

Picton is a very old settlement, with the first property built in 1822. It was explored a good two decades prior, but deemed unsuitable for a township until the Great South Road (now the Hume Highway) was constructed in 1819. “Stonequarry” was declared in 1841, before being renamed Picton four years later.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Picton’s large collection of old buildings make it a point of historical interest. It features rare bridge varieties not found elsewhere, and ghost tours are carried out in some of the more unsettling locations (such as the disused railway tunnels). Picton boasts lovely botanical gardens, and is known amongst beer fans as the source of several powerful brews. The George IV Inn is well worth a visit, as it’s one of the oldest hotels in the entire country.
