Penrith is a suburb and major centre in Sydney. 50km from the CBD, Penrith has a population of over 12,000 people.

History

Penrith takes its name from Penrith in Cumbria, England. The name is of Cumbric origin and means ‘Chief Ford’ or ‘Hill Ford”. Although unclear, it is thought to get its name because of the similarities in development between the two places.

Prior to European settlement, the area was the home of the Mulgoa tribe of the Darug people. Most were killed by smallpox or galgala after the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788.

The post office opened in 1828 and two churches, an Anglican church and a Catholic Church, followed.

Penrith is a major commercial centres in Greater Western Sydney. It contains four shopping centres including Westfield Penrith, the largest shopping centre in the suburb. It’s also home to the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Complex and Peppers Penrith Stadium.
