Peakhurst is a suburb in the St George Area in Sydney’s South, 21km south of Sydney’s CBD. It is in the local government area of the Georges River Council and has a population of over 9,000.

History

Peakhurst was named after John Robert Peake, a landowner who bought 10 acres near the junction of Forest Road and Henry Lawson Drive in 1838. The suburb was originally part of an 1808 land grant to Captain John Townson.

In 1971, when the public school was founded, School Inspector Huffer suggested that the suburb should be named after Peake.

Timber cutting was an important industry in the early days of the suburb.

Located along Forest Road and Boundary Road, Peakhurst is home to many shops, restaurants, cafes, and the Peakhurst Inn Hotel. The hotel has a pub and drive-through bottle shop. There are also many schools and sporting venues in the area.
