Parramatta is a major business district located just 23km from Sydney. It sits on the banks of the Parramatta River and has a population of around 20,000 people.

History

The land on which Parramatta now stands was once inhabited by the indigenous Darug people. It is believed they lived in the area for around 30,000 years.
Parramatta was established in 1788 making it the oldest inland European settlement in Australia. When the First Fleet arrived, Governor Arthur Phillip selected the area as the most suitable place on which to establish a large farm.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The main commercial area in Parramatta is centred on Church Street. Here, the abundance of shops, restaurants and cafes attract many visitors each year.
Elsewhere, there are a number of parks and reserves. These include Parramatta Park which is situated on land which was formerly part of the Governor’s Domain.
