Oyster Bay is a beachside suburb of Southern Sydney, NSW. Oyster Bay is 26 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD. It has a population of over 4,900.

History

The area was once home to the Eora people.

The bay is a natural feature of the Georges River. ‘Oyster Bay’ was named for the numerous oysters found in the bay.

It was part of former NSW Colonial Treasurer Thomas Holt’s estate. This estate covered 12,000 acres and most of the Sutherland Shire.

A general store opened in 1925. The name ‘Oyster Bay’ became official in 1933. A school opened in 1945. The suburb developed with post-World War II migration.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Oyster Bay has lovely parks and sporting grounds. Nearby Coronation Bay has a large intact mangrove area. This has a diverse, dynamic eco-system. This supports a wide variety of bird life.

Green Point is home to the Green Point Observatory. Staff and enthusiasts observe stars and conduct research. Regular events include astronomy courses and open nights.
