North Sydney is a suburb and commercial district in Sydney’s Lower North Shore. 3km north of the CBD, North Sydney has a population of over 6000.

History

Aborigines on the southern side of Port Jackson called the area Warung, This means “the other side”. Aborigines on the northern side used the same name to describe the southern side.

European settlers named the area Hunterhill. This was after property owner Thomas Muir of Huntershill, a Scottish political reformer.

In 1836, the township of St Leonards was laid out in what is now North Sydney. In 1890, the North Sydney municipality was incorporated, and the name North Sydney was chosen.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The commercial area has the second largest number of office buildings in NSW. These are mostly represented by advertising and information industries.

St Leonards Park is a popular place for joggers and dog walkers. The park includes the North Sydney Oval sporting facility.
