Nelson Bay is a suburb on the southern shore of Port Stephens and is a popular destination for tourists. It is 60km north-east of Newcastle and has a population of around 5,500 people.

History

Captain John Dalton and his family were amongst the earliest settlers in the area. In 1882, he built a house called ‘Westward Ho’ on a hill above the town and later gave land on which a school and church were built.

The Nelson Head Light was built in 1875 and is famous for being a lighthouse without a tower and it is open daily to the public.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Nelson Bay has a thriving tourism industry, centred on a beautiful marina called d’Albora Marina. From here, visitors can take part in a host of aquatic activities but most popular are the dolphin and whale watching trips.

Part of Nelson Bay sits in the Tomaree National Park which offers spectacular scenery and walking trails.
