Narwee is a suburb in southern Sydney. It is 18 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD. It has a population of over 4,900.

History

The area was once home to the Koori people.

Narwee was first known as ‘Sunning Hill Farm’. Narwee is an Aboriginal word meaning “sun”. It is unclear which language and dialect it comes from.

Residents were mostly poultry farmers and market gardeners. ‘Narwee’ became the suburb’s official name when the railway station opened in 1931.

People bought up land for residences when the railway arrived. The post office opened in 1948.

Narwee grew rapidly in the 1950s, when young families settled the area.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The main shopping strip is located adjacent to Narwee railway station. Like many small suburbs, Narwee has many smaller shops.

Neighbouring suburb Beverly Hills has a larger commercial district. This includes over 40 cafes and restaurants. Asian, Mediterranean, German and Modern Australian cuisines are all served.
