Narrabeen is a beachside suburb in northern Sydney. It is 23 kilometres north-east of the Sydney CBD. It has a population of over 7,400.

History

Captain James Cook named the area ‘Broken Bay’.

The name ‘Narrabeen’ may come from Aboriginal word ‘Narrabine’, meaning swan. The name may be in honour of local Aboriginal girl, Narrabine. She helped soldiers capture escaped convicts who murdered a first fleeter and his family.

The suburb’s first bridge opened in 1880. Narrabeen Post Office opened on 1 August 1898.

Narrabeen became a popular holiday spot in 1913 when the tram line reached the suburb. A large camping ground became established on the north shore of the lagoon.

In January 2005, skeletal remains of an adult male were found at a bus stop by workmen. Testing showed the skeleton was 4,000 years old. He was nicknamed ‘Narrabeen Man’.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The area is famed for its beaches. Narrabeen has four beaches and a lagoon. North Narrabeen beach hosts many surfing competitions. All four beaches have their own surf lifesaving clubs.

The Sydney Institute of Sport is in Narrabeen. It is the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles rugby league club’s headquarters.
