The popular holiday destination of Nambucca Heads is located to the north of the Nambucca River estuary. It has a population of more than 6,000 people.
History
Indigenous tribes named Nambucca Heads because of its location by the Nambucca River. Before European settlers arrived in the 1810s, the area was home to the Gumbaynggirr people.
The first houses were constructed here in the 1860s when the population of the settlement was around 50 people. A hotel and school followed in the 1880s.
The town claims to have one of Australia’s oldest lifesaving clubs. It is also the birthplace of the well-known junior branch of surf lifesaving – nippers.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Today the seaside town is a well-loved spot for holidaymakers and retired people. As well as a thriving life-saving club, the town has numerous schools and lies on the North Coast Railway Line.
