Morisset is home to 2,857 people according to the 2011 census. It is a suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie and is located 27km north-east of Wyong.

History

The suburb earned its name after Major James Morisset. He camped in the area in 1823 en route from Sydney to Newcastle. It was settled in 1826 in the area now called Cooranbong and forestry quickly became one of its primary industries.

A psychiatric hospital opened in Morisset in 1908, housing over 1,600 patients by the 1960s. It has since declined in size and is now a 130-bed hospital.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Morisset Country Club is a popular local attraction, with an 18-hole golf course and a fine restaurant. Morisset Train Station provides a direct line to both Sydney and Newcastle, and also serves as a central point for some local buses.
