Moama is a town in New South Wales. It’s located in the fertile Riverina region, some 800km west of Sydney. The town of Echuca, Victoria, is located directly across from Moama over the Murray River. Moama has a population of more than 5,500.

History

Once known as Maiden’s Punt, Moama began life in the 1840s. It was founded by James Maiden, who ran a successful cargo punting business across the Murray River. A township was eventually gazetted, and Moama was born in 1851. During the 1860s, the onset of paddle steamers saw both Moama and Echuca flourish as cargo ports. The towns continue to enjoy a good relationship.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Moama receives plenty of visitors during the summer months, especially when the Southern 80 Water Ski Race takes place. The town’s grand old buildings, such as the Moama Court House, are a big draw for those interested in history. Paddle steamer cruises are available from Echuca to Moama, including lunch and dinner cruises. For nature lovers, Horseshoe Wetland and Floodplain Reserve is a must-see.
