Merrylands is a suburb in western Sydney. It is 25 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD. It has a population of more than 26,600.

History

Merrylands was named after the former English home of local settler Arthur Todd Holroyd. He acquired land in this area in 1855. The adjoining suburb of Holroyd is named for him.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Several main cycle routes pass through Merrylands. It links it to surrounding suburbs Liverpool and Penrith. It also links Merrylands to Sydney Harbour.

Merrylands also has two aquatic centres. One is outdoor and one indoor. The indoor Merryland Swimming Centre consists of three pools. One pool is Olympic-sized. It is home to the Merrylands Amateur Swimming Club. It is one of the largest clubs in the Sydney Metropolitan Area.

The suburb has a large number of beautiful parks and sporting grounds. Central Gardens is a popular park in the area. It is a nature reserve with kangaroos, emus, and birdlife. It also has waterfalls around the lake.

Merrylands has a commercial area around Merrylands railway station. Stockland Merrylands is a large local shopping centre. It has supermarkets, discount department stores and specialty shops.
