The suburb of Medowie near to the Williamtown RAAF Base is about 34km north of the City of Newcastle. Before the development of residential and commercial areas around the city, it was a mainly rural area and it has a population of almost 9,000 people.

History

The Rural Fire Station based in Medowie was established in 1946. The population in the suburb has only grown from 6,278in 2001 to 8,843 in 2011 according to the census figures. Since it was recognised as a suburb of Newcastle Medowie came within the boundaries of the local government area of Port Stephens.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The area’s education needs are serviced by two state primary schools and a Christian School. A golf course at the southern end of Medowie provides sport and leisure along with a range of other organised clubs. These include soccer, cricket, rugby union, netball, and tennis.

Transport to the nearby City of Newcastle is provided by a major road network and the suburb is located right on the coast.
