Welcome to Mayfield, NSW
Located near the Hunter River, the suburb of Mayfield in Newcastle is named after Ada May the daughter of a previous land owner. Access to Newcastle Harbour and beyond is provided by the Great Northern Railway and the region has a population of over 12,000.
History
Originally semi-forest and scrubland, the region was until sub-division and later sale by John Scholey who was the Mayor on three occasions. By the beginning of the twentieth Century, the area was established as a residential suburb of Newcastle.
Industry came to the area in 1896 in the form of a steel works and foundry. The easy access to the coal fields and rail links were both deciding factors in starting such heavy industries in the area. By 1913 coal use in the area had reached a staggering 30,000 tons a week!
