Maroubra is a big and bold beachside neighbourhood. It is found in the eastern suburbs of Sydney and is ten kilometres south of the city’s central business district. It has a population of over 30,000.

History

While big residential projects only started in 1910, Maroubra’s history goes back a lot earlier. Maroubra is the Aboriginal word for ‘place of thunder’. The area famously made headlines in the late 19th century when the Hereward, a 1500-ton iron ship, was shipwrecked on Maroubra Beach after being caught in gale force winds.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

These days, Maroubra is one of the biggest suburbs in the area and has plenty of things to see and do. You’ll find the Pacific Square shopping centre at the popular Maroubra Junction, a buzzing hub that boasts supermarkets, outlets and specialty shops as well as an outdoor dining area.

If you need a break from the mall, Maroubra Beach stretches for a sandy kilometre with a skate park at the southern end. Nearby McKeon Street and Marine Parade are home to surf shops and yoga schools, as well as a range of restaurants and cute cafes.
