Malabar is a residential suburb, 12km southeast of the Sydney central business district. It has a population of 4,937.

History

The ship, MV Malabar, inspired the suburb’s name. It was a ship that shipwrecked on the rocks at Miranda Point in 1931. The Government gazetted the town in 1931.

The area is situated around Long Bay. Long Bay Penitentiary opened in 1914. The Long Bay Lifesaving and Amateur Swimming Club formed in 1918. They built their clubhouse at the Malabar Headland.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Malabar is a residential area. A large amount of land is devoted to Randwick Golf Course. The ANZAC Rifle Range is located here. The Malabar Headland features the Malabar Battery, a WWII fortification complex. The future of Malabar Headland is uncertain. It could become a National Park or be developed.

There is a small shopping centre on Edward Street.
