Liverpool is a suburb in New South Wales that is located 32 kilometres south-west of Sydney’s central business district. It has a population of over 24,000 and is one of the oldest urban settlements in Australia.

History

The suburb was founded in 1810 as an agricultural centre by Governor Lachlan Macquarie. He named the area after the Earl of Liverpool who was called Robert Banks Jenkinson. At that time, Jenkinson was the secretary of the state for the colonies and the city of Liverpool in Great Britain.

In the 1950s, Liverpool became an outer suburb of metropolitan Sydney. The area had a strong working-class presence and manufacturing industry. It was also renowned for housing thousands of low-income families in the 1960s.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Liverpool is best described as the biggest city centre in South Western Sydney. The main shopping area and Westfield Liverpool are located on Macquarie Street. Up the north end of the city, you can find lots of apartments.

There are plenty of parks and sports facilities in the city centre. Liverpool is also home to lots of schools and places of worship.
