Located in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, the City of Lithgow is the also the administrative centre of the local government area of the City of Lithgow. Situated in Lithgow’s Valley, it has a population of over 13,000 people.
History
Due to the difficult access to the area by road, the area only started growing after the railway arrived in 1877. The original Zig Zag railway has since been improved through the engineering of several tunnels in 1910 and later by modern roads.
The area used to be the home of what was once Australia’s only viable steel mill which was fuelled by the coal mining industry in the region. There is still 2 coal-fired power stations in the area and the old Lithgow Power Plant that was used from 1928 to 1964 has since been demolished.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Located on the edge of the Blue Mountains sandstone country, it is often referred to as the first “country town” in the region. Lithgow is close to several national parks, museums, and other heritage sites that attract large numbers of tourists into the area every year.
