Lidcombe is a suburb in western Sydney. It is 18 kilometres west of Sydney’s CBD.

History

The area was the border between the Darug and Eora tribes.

Samuel Haslam bought land in 1804. The creek within it became ‘Haslam’s Creek’ in his honour. The creek feeds into the Parramatta River.

Haslam’s Creek railway station opened in 1859. Rookwood Cemetery opened in 1867 as Haslam’s Creek Cemetery.

The suburb became ‘Rookwood’ in 1876. This was to set it apart from the cemetery. But many began calling the cemetery ‘Rookwood’. The suburb became ‘Lidcombe’ in 1913. It was to honour ex-Mayor Lidbury and new Mayor Larcombe.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Post-WWII migration changed Lidcombe’s makeup. Lidcombe became and remains a hub for the Ukrainian community. It has a Ukrainian Central School. It is home to Ukrainian newspaper ‘The Free Thought’.

Middle Eastern immigrants arrived in the 1960s and 1970s.

Lidcombe has large commercial and industrial areas. Lidcombe Shopping Centre has over 60 specialty stores. The Dairy Farmers’ distribution centre is in Lidcombe.
