Lakemba is a suburb in south-western Sydney, in NSW. It is 15 kilometres south-west of the Sydney CBD. It has a population of over 15,500.

History

The area was first called Potato Hill due to successful potato crops. It was ‘Belmore South’ until 1910.

The name ‘Lakemba’ comes from local historic property ‘Lakeba’. Benjamin Taylor established Lakeba in the 1880s. Pronounced ‘Lakemba’, its namesake is Fiji’s Lakeba Island. Taylor’s wife’s grandparents worked on Lakeba for the church from 1835.

The area’s first school opened in 1869. The post office opened in 1879. The railway station opened in 1909. The fire station opened in 1921.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Post-World War II migration saw Lakemba’s demographics diversify. The 1950s saw the growth of the Greek and Italian communities. In the mid-1970s, a Lebanese community began to develop.

This has resulted in Lakemba’s diverse commercial sector. Cuisines and other products from all over the world are available. Lakemba’s Mediterranean and Middle Eastern restaurants and food stores are highly regarded.
