Kogarah is one of Sydney’s southern suburbs. It is the centre of the St George area and sits just 14km from the central business district. It has a population of 4,220.

History

When Kogarah began life in 1,885, it stretched as far as Kogarah Bay. The suburb takes its name from the bay. Kogarah is an Aboriginal word meaning either “rushes” or “place of reeds”. However, Kogarah Bay is now part of Beverly Park.

Early European settlers in Kogarah included John Townson and James Chandler. The suburb provided Sydney with oysters as well as fruits and vegetables.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

There are many shops and other businesses near Kogarah railway station. The town centre is another hub for shopping in the local area. Local landmarks include a statue of Bruce Lee outside the town Library.

Kogarah is also home to Jubilee Oval. The Oval is the home ground of NRL’s St George Illawarra Dragons.
